Upcoming Movies

Jenny’s Picks

Lion King (July 19): The “live” adaptation of a classic Disney movie we all know and love is about to hit theaters and I am so ready! Personally I have loved the remakes of classic Disney movies and I am even more excited that the cast of voice actors include a range of talented people from Donald Glove to Beyonce to James Earl Jones.

The Dark Phoenix (June 07): The newest installation of the X-Men franchise is centered around a young Jean Grey becoming the Dark Phoenix. With a fully loaded cast of stars including Sophie Turner, Jennifer Lawrence and Evan Peters this movie seems like it will be a big hit this summer. Tell me this trailer doesn’t look epic!

BOOKSMART (May 24): This upcoming comedy looks like it has the same sense of humor as BridesMaids, which is why I’m looking forward to it. The comedy stars Lisa Kudrow and Olivia Wild who decide to have one last crazy night before going away to college. Check out the trailer below:

“Ma” (May 31): I’m really excited to watch Octavia Spencer in this upcoming horror flick about a group of teens who befriend a lonely older woman known as Ma. It’s by the producers of “Get Out” and “Happy Death Day” so hopefully it lives up to par.

Paige’s Picks

The Sun is Also A Star (May 17): I know it’s only April but so far the best book I read this year was The Sun Is Also A Star. The movie adaptation of this book stars Charles Melton and Yara Shahidi. The book had such unique narration and I’m excited to see how the movie deals with that. My hope is that they don’t reduce such a well written novel to a cheesy teenage romance, because it is so much more than that.

Spider-Man: Far From Home (June 2): Marvel’s take on the friendly neighborhood spider-man was a pleasant surprise when Spiderman: Homecoming was released. I think the sequel is going to be another action packed, hilarious, summer flick. I can’t wait to see what antics Peter Parker gets into in Europe.

Spencer’s Picks

Tolkien (May 10): This is about as on-brand for me as it gets, but I’m excited for Tolkien. The fact that the trailer immediately establishes Tolkien as a total language nerd gives me some hope for the enthusiasm of its creators right off the bat. Plus, as a LotR fan, what’s not to like about seeing a take on this famed author’s life on the silver screen?

Erin’s Picks

Yesterday (June 28): Starring Himesh Patel, “Yesterday” is a musical comedy about a musician who finds himself in a world where he’s the only one who remembers The Beatles. He begins performing their music as if it were his own, and soon becomes famous. The film also stars Kate McKinnon, Lily James and Ed Sheeran, and overall looks like a quirky, cute film.

Midsommar (July 3): From the director of Hereditary (Ari Aster) comes a “slice of Scandinavian folk horror.“ When a young couple travels to a small town in Sweden, their idylic vacation doesn’t quite go as planned. Think Swedish summer-festival turned bizarre pagan cult. Midsommar stars Jack Reynor and Florence Pugh, and it’s one of my most anticipated horror films of 2019.

J.Thomas’ Picks

“Joker” (October): A standalone DC film about the titular iconic “Batman” villain. This Joker is played by Joaquin Phoenix, and appears to be a return to the more personal, introspective Clown Prince of Crime, as portrayed by the late Heath Ledger

“Sonic the Hedgehog” (November): This is the latest in a long line of live-action adaptations of animated properties that no one asked for. Visually, this movie looks like an abomination, an affront to God. I expect to read plenty of entertaining reviews and then forget about this movie forever.
